G2 License and Driving Rules in Ontario

G2 License and Driving Rules in Ontario

The freedom of having a G2 license can be exhilarating. You can now go where you want, when you want - the options are seemingly endless. But this freedom also comes with new challenges and responsibilities. Understanding the rules of your license is crucial to becoming a successful driver. In this article, we’ll dive into the process of achieving the second tier of graduated licensing:

What is a G2 License?

The G2 license is the second level of graduated licensing in Ontario after obtaining your G1.  Drivers must progress to the G2 process before they can attempt to get a full G license.

How Do You Get a G2 License?

To acquire a G2 license, you’ll need to pass the G2 road test, during which a DriveTest examiner will assess your ability to complete basic driving skills such as parking, turning, signalling, and stopping. While not mandatory, many choose to enroll in a certified driving school course to bolster their preparedness for the test.

How Long Does it Take to Get Your G2 License?

You can get your G2 license 12 months after completing and passing the written exam for your G1-level license. However, you can expedite this wait time to just eight months if you are able to complete a certified driving school course successfully.

What Happens If You Fail the G2 Road Test?

If you don’t pass on your initial attempt, you can retake the G2 road test. Bear in mind that there is a mandatory 10-day waiting period before you can schedule your next attempt.  Additionally, your G1 license must still be valid in order to retake your G2 test.

Approximately 31% of drivers fail their G2 road test on the first try, so it’s not uncommon to have to take it again. Rest assured, you have the option to retake the test as many times as needed to secure that passing grade.

G2 License Restrictions

While the G2 license grants more freedom than the G1, certain boundaries remain in place for individuals driving without a full G license to ensure safety, such as:

  • A blood-alcohol level of zero at all times
  • A working seat belt for each person in the vehicle

For those 19 years of age or younger, specific G2 driving restrictions apply between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. The limits are as follows:

  • For the first six months after getting your G2, you are only allowed to carry one other person in the vehicle with you who is also under the age of 19.
  • After completing the first six months, and until you either turn 20 or get your full G license, G2 drivers can legally carry up to three passengers aged 19 or below.

These restrictions are not applicable if the driver is accompanied by a fully licensed driver in the passenger seat or if the passengers are immediate family members of the G2 driver.

How Much Does it Cost to Get a G2 License?

To take the G2 road test, you must pay a fee of $53.75. After successful completion of the test, you are additionally required to pay a $90 licensing fee. This license expires after five years.

Consequences of Driving Alone Without a G2 License

There are multiple consequences associated with being caught driving alone without a G2 license, including:

  • A 30-day suspension of your G1 license
  • A minimum fine of $110

Fines, suspension lengths, and the potential for demerit points all differ depending on how many offences the driver has committed. It is worth noting you can only receive nine demerit points as a G2 driver before your license is suspended for 60 days.
