How to Avoid an Accident This Fall

How to Avoid an Accident This Fall

No one wants to get into a car accident. Unfortunately, they happen on a daily basis around the world. Luckily, there are plenty of precautions you can take this fall to keep yourself, your passengers, and everyone who shares the road, safe. Below we’ve listed some responsible practices that can help you stay safe on the road and confident in your ability to do so!

Avoid the Fast Lane

Your first priority is arriving at your destination in one piece, so there is no reason to take the fast lane, where most highway accidents occur. Instead, try sticking to the middle lanes, where you have more “escape” options if you encounter someone driving recklessly.

Be Alert for Any Potential Threats

When on the road, you should drive defensively to be prepared for any hazards you may encounter while driving, such as a biker riding too close for comfort, or a pedestrian looking like they may jaywalk into oncoming traffic. In any scenario like the ones described, you should try to get away safely from the threat if possible. If this isn’t feasible, then you should be prepared to stop abruptly if need be or otherwise avoid a collision if the threat remains.

Avoid Blind Spots

Your rearview and side mirrors will give you a nearly perfect panoramic view of the rear and sides of your car. Still, you shouldn’t rely on these features alone. Before switching lanes, you should physically turn and take a thorough look at the space next to you to ensure that you aren’t missing something your mirror didn’t catch. You should also be conscious of other drivers’ blind spots and try to stay out or limit your time spent in them.

Know Your Car

Every car is different and has its own limits. You should know what your car is capable of and drive accordingly. Become familiar with your car’s tires and brakes and how they react to certain situations or driving conditions. With this knowledge, you’ll be confident in knowing the best way to react in an unexpected situation.

Be Careful at Nighttime

While some people choose to drive at night to avoid traffic, there’s a set of risks that come with this that you should be aware of. You may be tired, not have clear road visibility, or come across other tired or drunk drivers. In summary, be extra careful during these hours!
