G Test Ontario Tips

The G test is a pivotal moment in many people’s lives. Obtaining your full driver’s license gives you many personal freedoms that you didn’t enjoy before. This guide reviews some important things you should know about your G test in Ontario and tips for passing.

What is the G Test in Ontario?

There are two G tests in Ontario that drivers need to take before they can get their full driver’s license. Passing the G1 allows you to drive as long as you have someone with at least four years of driving experience in the vehicle with you. After you’ve driven for a year with a G1 license, you’re qualified to take the G2.

The G2 is the last step to getting your full driver’s license, so you need to be prepared for it. If you have any plans to drive commercially, you can only get a commercial driver’s license once you have your G2.

What to Know About the G Test in Ontario

There are some things you need to know before you take your G test:

  • The test costs $91.25, and you need to pay this fee each time you take the test. If you fail the first time, you need to pay again to retake it.
  • You can find a testing center by visiting drivetest.ca. From there, you can schedule a time for your test.
  • There is no set number of mistakes needed to fail a G test. Some mistakes are more serious, and repeating the same error could hurt you more than if you only made it once. You need a score of 80 or higher to pass, but your examiner is responsible for determining your final score.
  • You need at least 12 months of experience before you take the test.
  • Having auto insurance when taking your test is important because your examiner won’t allow you to drive without it.

Tips for Passing the G Test in Ontario

Here are some tips to help you prepare for your G test in Ontario:

  • Practice driving under someone else’s supervision as much as you can. You get better with experience, so take every opportunity available to drive.
  • Don’t take the test until you know you’re ready for it. You should study the Ontario Driver’s Handbook and ensure you know all the rules of the road.
  • Arrive at your test well-rested. You’re more likely to make mistakes if you’re tired.
  • Don’t lean your seat back, and keep your head and neck straight. This gives you the best view of the road and allows you to look at several cars ahead.
  • Keep your distance from other vehicles on the road. Maintaining a safe following distance gives you more time to react to other drivers. The extra space also helps you see farther down the road.
  • Take your time when performing parking maneuvers. This could be the difference between a successful parallel park and a mistake.
