Types of Home Insurance Coverage in Ottawa

The types of home insurance in Ottawa can be defined by their components, including property coverage, liability coverage, and add-on coverage.

Property Coverage Types

A standard home insurance policy in Ottawa includes the following:

Property

Property coverage is based on the total amount required to replace your property’s main home structure. This type of coverage typically protects your home from all common perils, such as weather, fire, or theft. Keep in mind, however, that property coverage is based on the replacement value of your home, which can differ significantly from its market value.

Personal Property

Contents and personal property coverage include everything found inside your home, such as furniture, appliances, computers, and housewares. The coverage applies in case anything gets lost, damaged, or stolen.

Additional Living Expenses

If you and your family are displaced from your home due to damage, most home insurance policies will cover the expenses associated with accommodation and food for the period of displacement.

Liability Coverage Types

Home insurance policies should also protect your personal liability in case an accident happens on your property. Here are the applicable coverage types:

Personal Liability

Personal liability coverage protects homeowners against claims and lawsuits that might happen if somebody suffers an injury on their property. While most standard home insurance policies will include a $100,000 coverage for personal liability, some homeowners may choose to increase this coverage to as high as $1,000,000.

Voluntary Property Damage

This type of coverage will cover expenses to fix the damage you cause to somebody else’s property, even if you are not legally liable for them. For example, if a homeowner accidentally damages a neighbour’s fence, voluntary property damage coverage may be used to cover the repair costs. While this type of coverage can vary from policy to policy and go up to as high as $6,000, most home insurance companies in Ottawa set the voluntary property damage limit to $1,000.

Voluntary Medical Payments

Similarly, voluntary medical payments coverage will cover medical expenses for somebody who suffers an injury on your property, even if no legal claim or lawsuit has been made. Voluntary medical payments usually range from $5,000 to $10,000 without a deductible.

Home-Insurance Add-Ons

You can also personalize the home insurance for your Ottawa home by selecting additional protection, such as:

  • Sewer backup coverage
  • Earthquake coverage
  • Mass evacuation coverage
  • Overland water coverage
  • Identity theft coverage
  • Lock replacement coverage

What is a registered insurance broker?

In Ontario, insurance brokers are governed by the Registered Insurance Brokers Act of Ontario.

A registered insurance broker is an independent insurance professional. Brokers sell general insurance including coverage for home, business, automobile, farm, boat, ATV, life, etc.

Brokers represent your best interests when negotiating a contract with an insurance provider.

Unlike an agent, an insurance broker does not work directly for an insurance company or financial institution. Brokers act as an ntermediary between an insurance provider and the client.

Insurance brokers can offer several choices from a variety of insurance providers.

They are well versed on various insurance products available. They are not affiliated with insurance companies or financial institutions and can offer independent, non-biased advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is home insurance mandatory in Ottawa?

Unlike car insurance that is mandatory in Canada, home insurance is not. However, it may be required in certain situations. For instance, if you need a mortgage, most lenders will require home insurance to protect the security of their loan. A condo board may also request that you have home insurance before you can buy the unit. Our team at Rowat Insurance will always make sure that you have the appropriate coverages as set out by the subject lender or board.

Why is it essential to have home insurance in Ottawa?

Home insurance does more than just protect your home and the contents inside. It also provides you with liability insurance that covers you if someone is injured on your property or if you cause damage to someone else’s property. The liability section of your home insurance policy will even cover you if you cause injury or damage outside of your province. For example, you will be covered if you accidentally cause a fire at a hotel that you’re staying at on vacation and there is significant damages that result.

Will my house insurance have any limits for coverage?

Yes. There will be different limits for each policy. To ensure you have the right coverage for your needs, we will work closely with you to determine the exact requirements for your situation. In the event that you have items that are not covered by the standard policy, we can add additional coverages or a floater to adjust your policy to provide specific protection.

What is a deductible, and how is it determined?

The deductible is the amount that you will need to pay when you make a claim before the insurer will cover the rest. For instance, if you have a $1000 deductible and it costs $10,000 to replace your contents after a break-in, you will pay the initial $1000 and then your insurance company would pay the remaining $9,000. The deductible is often determined by using a percentage of the home’s value insured. However, you can change the deductible to suit you. Just remember, the higher the deductible, the lower the insurance premiums.

What is the difference between actual cash value and replacement cost?

The “Actual Cash Value” is the value of something on the day the claim is submitted by factoring in the replacement cost, minus depreciation. For example, if you bought a TV in 2018 for $500 and today it’s worth $200, you would get $200 cash for the item. When insurers use the “Replacement Cost” they will replace the item with a comparable item that is new. So in the same example as above, they would replace the TV with a new one that has a similar value to the old one that was stolen.
